Please consider supporting the National Secular Society’s “No More Faith Schools” campaign for an inclusive and truly nondenominational (community ethos) education system.

As our society becomes more religiously diverse and irreligious, people from across the political and religious spectrum are turning against faith-based schools. Our best opportunity for inclusive society tomorrow is when schools bring together children from all backgrounds to learn and grow together today.

Despite this the Scottish government continues to support a denominational division in state schools.

While religious organisations played an important historic role in the development of state education, the time has long since come to move beyond this archaic settlement. A truly nondenominational school system would respect the rights of families from all backgrounds and end the discrimination and inequity in our current system of faith schools.

The state has no business spending public money on schools which promote a particular religious agenda. I urge you to take action to encourage the growth of inclusive community schools and roll back the growth of faith schools.

While religious organisations played an important historic role in the development of state education, the time has long since come to move beyond this archaic settlement. A community school system would respect the rights of families from all backgrounds and end the discrimination and inequity in our current system of faith schools.

The most high-profile harm caused by faith schools is that of religious discrimination in admissions, which locks so many families out of their local taxpayer funded schools and entrenches division, but this is not the only harm. In many areas, families have little practical choice but a faith school, even if it conflicts with their beliefs. In many cases schools have hidden behind their faith ethos to promote intolerance. And as government policy encourages the growth of faith schools, schools from a variety of faiths are becoming more aggressive in promoting their own views.

Education in Northern Ireland is highly religiously segregated and denominational schools still divide children in Scotland.
